Hello, Today I started the restoration of a large wooden gilded frame from the nineteenth century. The frame is decorated principly with twisted acanthus leaves, on the inner edge with twist ribbon ornamention and a mall round bead (pearls) repeated in series along the outer edge. The frame is very dirty, with many broken pieces including some lost beads, and the metal gold leaf is very dark in some areas. The first thing I did was vacuum it, and that was when I discovered that a large part of the central molding was completely loose and not glued down, so I took it off. Then I started to glue down all the loose parts with polyvinyl acetate (PVA).
Tomorrow, when all parts are secure and glued, I will continue with the cleaning. Thank you for reading.

Hello, I just took an online class about restoration but I have not been able to find out what to wash my wooden non gilded frame with. My Italian mother in law left to me in her will. It got tarnished hanging over a gas log fireplace. What would you suggest to clean with before gilding please? Thank so very much for your wonderful blogs and informative website!
